National Steelmakers Association calls for 'protection of American steel products'

On July 26th, The American Association of Steelmakers (SMA) and six other local industry groups - the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM), the American Institute of Structural Steel (AISC), the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the American Council on Pipe and Tube Imports (CPTI), the North American Specialty Steel Industries Association (SSINA), and the United Steelworkers (USW) - sent a letter to the United States the Speaker of the House of Representatives urged him to include the Playing Field 2.0 Act as part of an upcoming package of laws that would "protect U.S. steel products from unfair trade practices by other countries."

Philip Bell, president of the National Steelmakers Association, said: "The Level Playing Field 2.0 Act, which has strong support in both the House and the Senate, will help the United States stop China from dumping steel products into the U.S. market by shifting production capacity elsewhere. This legislation is urgently needed to stop unfair trade practices that harm U.S. steel producers and their workers."

"The United States needs to update the Level Playing Field Act to address cross-border subsidies and other similar trade challenges," said Kevin Dempsey, chief executive of the American Iron and Steel Institute.

Roger Schagrin, executive director and general counsel of the American Council on Pipe and Pipe Imports, said: "The U.S. pipe, pipe, and fittings industry strongly urges Congress to enact legislation to take action and provide the necessary tools to ensure that American businesses and workers can respond to China's unfair trade practices and actions designed to weaken the U.S. economy and threaten national security."

Over the past 10 years, unilateral protectionist measures taken by the United States for steel products have not only failed to prevent the loss of jobs in the US metal manufacturing industry, but also increased costs in the US economy and other areas and reduced the competitiveness of relevant industries.
