Global crude steel production fell 6.5 per cent in August from a year earlier

On September 24, the World Steel Association (WSA) released global crude steel production data for August 2024. In August 2024, the crude steel production of the 71 countries and regions included in the World Steel Association statistics was 144.8 million tons, down 6.5% year-on-year. From January to August, the crude steel production of 71 countries and regions included in the World Steel Association statistics was 1.251 billion tons, down 1.5% year-on-year.

By region, in August, Africa's crude steel production was 1.9 million tons, down 7.2% year-on-year; Crude steel production in Asia and Oceania was 107.1 million tons, down 8.0% year-on-year. Crude steel production in the European Union (27) was 9.1 million tonnes, up 2.2% year-on-year; Crude steel production in other European countries was 3.7 million tons, an increase of 8.4%. Crude steel production in the Middle East was 3.4 million tonnes, down 3.2% year-on-year; North American crude steel production was 9 million tons, down 3.8%. Crude steel production in Russia and other CIS countries + Ukraine was 7 million tons, down 8.7% year-on-year; Crude steel production in South America was 3.6 million tons, up 0.8% year-on-year.

From the world's 10 largest steel producing countries (places), in August, China's crude steel production was 77.92 million tons, down 10.4%; India's crude steel production was 12.3 million tonnes, up 2.6% year-on-year; Crude steel production in the United States was 7 million tons, up 0.7% year-on-year; Japan's crude steel production was 6.9 million tons, down 3.9% year-on-year; Russia's crude steel production is expected to be 5.8 million tons, down 11.5% year-on-year; South Korea's crude steel production was 5.5 million tons, down 2.2% year-on-year; Turkey's crude steel production was 3.1 million tons, up 13.8% year-on-year; Brazil's crude steel production was 3 million tons, an increase of 7.3%. Crude steel production in Germany was 2.9 million tonnes, down 0.5% year-on-year; Iran's crude steel production was 1.4 million tons, down 9.9% year on year.
