In 2023, the world produce 1.888 billion tons of steel


The World Steel Association (WSA) has released global crude steel production data for December 2023. In December 2023, the crude steel production of 71 countries and regions included in the World Steel Association statistics was 135.7 million tons, down 5.3% year-on-year. In the whole year of 2023, the cumulative global crude steel production reached 1.888 billion tons, which was basically flat year-on-year.

By region, in December 2023, Africa's crude steel production was 1.9 million tons, an increase of 17.7%; Crude steel production in Asia and Oceania was 96.4 million tons, down 9.7% year-on-year; Crude steel production in the EU (27 countries) was 9.1 million tonnes, up 2.7% year-on-year; Crude steel production in other European countries was 3.9 million tons, an increase of 19.4%. Crude steel production in the Middle East was 4.9 million tons, up 9.6% year-on-year; North American crude steel production was 9.3 million tons, an increase of 5.3%. Crude steel production in Russia and other CIS countries + Ukraine was 7.1 million tons, up 11.8% year on year; Crude steel production in South America was 3.2 million tonnes, down 3.2% year-on-year.

From the world's 10 largest steel producing countries (places), in December 2023, China's crude steel production was 67.44 million tons, down 14.9% year-on-year; India's crude steel production was 12.1 million tonnes, up 9.5% year-on-year; Japan's crude steel production was 7 million tons, up 1.1% year-on-year; Crude steel production in the United States was 6.8 million tons, an increase of 7.6%. Russia's crude steel production is expected to be 6 million tons, up 4.3% year-on-year; South Korea's crude steel production was 5.4 million tons, up 2.7% year on year; Turkey's crude steel production was 3.2 million tons, an increase of 21.2%. Iran's crude steel production was 2.9 million tons, up 12.1% year on year; Crude steel production in Germany was 2.6 million tonnes, down 2.3% year-on-year; Brazil's crude steel production was 2.5 million tonnes, up 0.9% year-on-year.

In December 2023, from the perspective of blast furnace pig iron production, the pig iron production of 37 countries (regions) in the world was 956.5 billion tons, down 6.7% year-on-year. Among them, by region, the production of pig iron in the European Union (27 countries) was 5.22 million tons, an increase of 1.2%; Pig iron production in other European countries was 1.28 million tons, an increase of 8.2%. Pig iron production in Russia and other CIS countries + Ukraine was 5.21 million tons, up 9.1% year on year; North American pig iron production is expected to be 2.59 million tons, an increase of 10.8%. Pig iron production in South America was 2.4 million tons, down 3.6% year-on-year;  Oceania pig iron production was 310,000 tons, down 8.3% year on year. In 2023, the global cumulative production of pig iron is 1.286 billion tons, an increase of 0.5%.
